Beyond Babyhood - Scrapbooking the Toddler Years

I love babies. Anyone who knows me for 5 minutes can see that. BUT I adore scrapbooking toddlers. They are so busy, so inquisitive and come out with some of the best one liners you could never imagine. However, so much of scrapbooking focuses on events- a new baby, weddings, parties- that sometimes the everyday happenings of your growing boy or girl get overlooked. Not only that, there is never a shortage of photos of a new baby! Sometimes with toddlers we are just so busy getting by and keeping life moving that we forget to stop and photograph their everyday lives. Toddlers grow and change gradually and their milestones are different. Make a note of a few of the ideas here, and do your best to photograph a few moments and keep a few notes on what was happening. A word or notepad document stored in a folder with the photos is a great and easy way to make sure you have everything stored, digitally, in one place.

Here is a list of some great ideas for scrapbooking toddlers:

You don't say: keep a list of favourite sayings or language mix ups your toddler has. My son always says 'either' when he means 'also'. So I will say 'spaghetti is my favourite' and he says 'me either'. These can be scrapped with just a few favourite photos you have. You can just use the phrase as the title or write a little story to give the saying some context.

My favourite things: Open the lid of the toy box or take a photo of your child's favourite toys lined up on the bed. Or if you live in my house, a photo of the living room floor will have all the best toys spread out for you!

Works of art: Toddlers produce so many paintings and drawings, we tend to get a bit blasé about them. Make a point one day of dressing them in old clothes and letting them paint you a masterpiece. If you are a paper scrapper, give them a piece of acid free card stock- it makes wonderful and unique background paper. Take photos as they are immersed in creation, and then use a photo of the finished piece in your page alongside photos of them in action.

Dancing and singing: If your toddler likes to dance and sing to a favourite DVD or CD, take a few photos of them as they dance and spin around the room.

Favourite games: Just everyday photos of them engaged in paying with their favourite toys, like trains, cars, or kitchens are wonderful records of your everyday life.

Life's lessons: many toddlers these days now have busy lives, with music, gym or swim classes. Take photos of them as they start out on these adventures as they experiment with the world and learn to like (or dislike) certain things and activities Friends: So many of your toddlers' friends will be the children of your friends that you have met through mothers group of ante-natal classes. Once they start school, their friendship groups could change a lot, especially if you live in different school zones. Take a photos of them hanging out with their little buddies, so they can look back and remember all the fun times they had.
