The Psychology Behind Buying Him Gifts

If you're like me, you'll find buying for your boyfriend or husband a complete nightmare. You've seen the way he looks at some of last year's gifts for him and you'd like to buy him something for his birthday or Christmas present that you think he'd really like. So leave socks behind, forget aftershave and focus on him.

Now short of buying him a lap dance, it's not easy to buy gifts for men. They're much more fickle when it comes to presents than women and that can make choosing gifts for men very difficult. However, they're not impossible to buy for if you engage in a little male psychology! Here are my top tips for generating gift ideas for men.

BUY HIM SOMETHING HE CAN SHOW OFF - Men can be more than a little bit competitive with other men, it's part of their biological make up, so use this secret trick to make him feel special. If you're stuck for gift ideas for him, get him something that allows him to feel superior in front of other men. When he's the envy of all around him, he won't be able to thank you enough!

INDULGE HIS INNER CHILD - They don't ever really grow up, men. Well into their 40s, you'll still find them enjoying toys or computer games. So, okay, their tastes become a little more sophisticated but basically if you can amuse the inner child, you can keep him occupied for hours. This means puzzles, games and gadgets are a great gift for men. If he's particularly good at the puzzle, he'll be able to show off about it too!

APPEAL TO THE CAVE MAN - The hunter-gatherer may be millions of years old, but he's still basically motivated by base needs. The base needs are as ancient as mankind itself and it doesn't take much to engage the internal meathead. His most basic needs are for sex, food and shelter. Appeal to all three and you'll have him eating out of your hand.

MAKE HIM FEEL LIKE THE MAN - Strongly related to his prehistoric urges is his need to be the man. He needs to feel like the provider, the protector and this need begins in adolescence and carries through with him for life. It's become an increasingly emasculating society, sensitive men sharing their feelings has moved mankind away from their primitive desires. But being a man's man is considered to be making a come back, so look for opportunities to boost his masculinity.
